Abstract
BACKGROUND Crops are constantly attacked by various pathogens. These pathogenic microorganisms, such as fungi, oomycetes, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes, threaten global food security by causing detrimental crop diseases that generate tremendous quality and yield losses worldwide. Chemical pesticides have undoubtedly reduced crop damage; however, in addition to increasing the cost of agricultural production, the extensive use of chemical pesticides comes with environmental and social costs. Therefore, it is necessary to vigorously develop sustainable disease prevention and control strategies to promote the transition from traditional chemical control to modern green technologies. Plants possess sophisticated and efficient defense mechanisms against a wide range of pathogens naturally. Immune induction technology based on plant immunity inducers can prime plant defense mechanisms and greatly decrease the occurrence and severity of plant diseases. Reducing the use of agrochemicals is an effective way to minimize environmental pollution and promote agricultural safety. AIM OF REVIEW The purpose of this workis to offer valuable insights into the current understanding and future research perspectives of plant immunity inducers and their uses in plant disease control, ecological and environmental protection, and sustainable development of agriculture. KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS OF REVIEW In this work, we have introduced the concepts of sustainable and environment-friendly concepts of green disease prevention and control technologies based on plant immunity inducers. This article comprehensively summarizes these recent advances, emphasizes the importance of sustainable disease prevention and control technologies for food security, and highlights the diverse functions of plant immunity inducers-mediated disease resistance. The challenges encountered in the potential applications of plant immunity inducers and future research orientation are also discussed.

A review of sugar beet pectin-stabilized emulsion: extraction, structure, interfacial self-assembly and emulsion stability.

Abstract
In recent years, sugar beet pectin as a natural emulsifier has shown great potential in food and pharmaceutical fields. However, the emulsification performance depends on the molecular structure of sugar beet pectin, and the molecular structure is closely related to the extraction method. This review summarizes the extraction methods of pectin, structure characterization methods and the current research status of sugar beet pectin-stabilized emulsions. The structural characteristics of sugar beet pectin (such as degree of methylation, degree of acetylation, degree of blockiness, molecular weight, ferulic acid content, protein content, neutral sugar side chains, etc.) are of great significance to the emulsifying activity and stability of sugar beet pectin. Compared with traditional hot acid extraction method, ultrasonic-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, subcritical water-assisted extraction, induced electric field-assisted extraction and enzyme-assisted extraction can improve the yield of sugar beet pectin. At the same time, compared with harsh extraction conditions (too high temperature, too strong acidity, too long extraction time, etc.), mild extraction conditions can better preserve these emulsifying groups in sugar beet pectin molecules, which are beneficial to improve the emulsifying properties of sugar beet pectin. In addition, the interfacial self-assembly behavior of sugar beet pectin induced by the molecular structure is crucial to the long-term stability of the emulsion. This review provides a direction for extracting or modifying sugar beet pectin with specific structure and function, which is instructive for finding alternatives to gum arabic.

Quantitative assessment of retinal vasculature changes in systemic lupus erythematosus using wide-field OCTA and the correlation with disease activity.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the retinal vasculature changes quantitatively using wide-field optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and explore its correlation with systemic clinical features. DESIGN Prospective, cross-sectional, observational study. PARTICIPANTS AND CONTROLS Patients with SLE who presented to the Ophthalmology Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital from November 2022 to April 2023 were collected. The subjects were divided into retinopathy and without retinopathy groups. Age and gender-matched healthy subjects were selected as controls. METHODS Patients with SLE and control subjects were imaged with 24×20 mm OCTA scans centered on the fovea and 6×6 mm OCTA scans centered on the optic disc. The sub-layers of OCTA images were stratified by the built-in software of the device and then the retinal thickness and vessel density were measured automatically. The characteristics of retinal OCTA parameters of SLE and its correlation with systemic clinical indicators of patients without retinopathy were analyzed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES OCTA parameters, visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and systemic clinical indicators of patients such as disease activity index, autoimmune antibodies, and inflammatory marker levels were collected. RESULTS A total of 102 SLE patients were included, 24 of which had retinopathy, and 78 had unaffected retina. Wide-field OCTA could effectively detect retinal vascular obstruction, non-perfusion area, and morphological abnormalities in patients with lupus retinopathy. SLE patients without retinopathy had significantly higher retinal superficial vessel density (SVD) in foveal (P=0.02), para-foveal temporal (P=0.01), nasal (P=0.01), peripheral foveal temporal (P=0.02), and inferior areas (P=0.02), as well as subregion temporal (P=0.01) and inferior areas (P=0.03) when compared with healthy controls (n=65 eyes from 65 participants). The area under curve (AUC) value of subregion inferior SVD combined parafoveal temporal SVD was up to 0.70. There was a significantly positive correlation between SVD and disease activity in SLE without retinopathy group. Patients with severe activity had the most significant increase in SVD. CONCLUSION Wide-field OCTA can provide a relatively comprehensive assessment of the retinal vasculature in SLE. In the absence of pathological changes of the retina, the SVD was significantly increased and was positively correlated with the disease activity of SLE.

Interventions for Postextubation Dysphagia in Critically Ill Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review evaluates the efficacy and safety of dysphagia interventions for patients with prolonged endotracheal intubation (⩾48 h) in critical care units. DATA SOURCES We systematically searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Medline, Embase, OVID, CINAHL, Wanfang (China), CNKI (China), and ProQuest Dissertations for studies published up to December 31, 2023. STUDY SELECTION Inclusion criteria encompassed randomized controlled trials (RCTs), quasi-randomized trials, and cohort studies comparing dysphagia rehabilitation - such as swallowing stimulation, swallowing and respiratory muscle exercise, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation - with standard care or no treatment. The primary outcomes assessed were dysphagia severity, time to resume oral intake, and incidence of aspiration and aspiration pneumonia. DATA EXTRACTION Detailed information on study design, setting, participant demographics, interventions, and outcomes was systematically extracted. DATA SYNTHESIS Our analysis included ten studies with a total of 1031 participants. The findings demonstrate a significant reduction in dysphagia severity, time to oral intake and the risk of aspiration pneumonia, and an improvement in quality of life among patients receiving swallowing therapy. However, no substantial difference was found in nutritional status. Limited data availability necessitated a descriptive presentation of outcomes like the risk of aspiration, ICU/hospital stay duration, pharyngeal/oral residue severity, and intervention-related adverse events. CONCLUSION The current evidence for the effectiveness of dysphagia interventions in critically ill patients with prolonged endotracheal intubation is limited. There is a pressing need for future research, particularly high-quality RCTs employing standardized outcome measures, to substantiate these findings.

Serum food specific IgG antibodies are associated with small bowel inflammation in patients with Crohn's disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Food antigens are thought to play a vital role in the initiation and perpetuation of Crohn's disease (CD). The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential association of serum food specific IgG antibodies and small bowel (SB) inflammation in CD patients. METHODS We conducted a prospective observational study with 96 CD patients. Demographic, disease-related data and inflammatory parameters were collected. Serum food IgG antibodies were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Capsule endoscopy was performed to detect SB inflammation quantified by the Lewis Score. RESULTS Seventy-eight of (81.3%) CD patients were detected positive for at least one food-specific antibody. The five most prevalent food antibodies in CD patients were tomato, egg, corn, rice, and soybean. Patients with SB inflammation had a higher positive rate of food IgG antibodies (P = 0.010) and more IgG-positive food items (P = 0.010) than those without. Specifically, patients with SB inflammation were more likely to have positive food-specific IgG against egg (P = 0.014), corn (P = 0.014), and wheat (P = 0.048). Additionally, the number of positive food IgGs ≥ 3 and elevated ESR were independently associated with concurrent SB inflammation (P = 0.015 and P = 0.013, respectively). CONCLUSION Our study confirmed that CD patients with SB inflammation had a higher positive rate of food IgG antibodies and more IgG-positive food items. The number of food positive IgGs ≥ 3 and elevated ESR were independently associated with concurrent SB inflammation.

Cut-off values of haemoglobin and clinical outcomes in incident peritoneal dialysis: the PDTAP study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To explore the cut-off values of haemoglobin (Hb) on adverse clinical outcomes in incident peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients based on a national-level database. METHODS The observational cohort study was from the Peritoneal Dialysis Telemedicine-assisted Platform (PDTAP) dataset. The primary outcomes were all-cause mortality, major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and modified MACE (MACE+). The secondary outcomes were the occurrences of hospitalization, first-episode peritonitis and permanent transfer to haemodialysis (HD). RESULTS A total of 2591 PD patients were enrolled between June 2016 and April 2019 and followed up until December 2020. Baseline and time-averaged Hb <100 g/l were associated with all-cause mortality, MACE, MACE+ and hospitalizations. After multivariable adjustments, only time-averaged Hb <100 g/l significantly predicted a higher risk for all-cause mortality {hazard ratio [HR] 1.83 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.19-281], P = .006}, MACE [HR 1.99 (95% CI 1.16-3.40), P = .012] and MACE+ [HR 1.77 (95% CI 1.15-2.73), P = .010] in the total cohort. No associations between Hb and hospitalizations, transfer to HD and first-episode peritonitis were observed. Among patients with Hb ≥100 g/l at baseline, younger age, female, use of iron supplementation, lower values of serum albumin and renal Kt/V independently predicted the incidence of Hb <100 g/l during the follow-up. CONCLUSION This study provided real-world evidence on the cut-off value of Hb for predicting poorer outcomes through a nation-level prospective PD cohort.

Effects of the Chinese heart-healthy diet (Sichuan cuisine) on lowering blood pressure in adults with hypertension: a randomized controlled feeding trial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Sichuan cuisine is characterized by high salt and oil content. We aimed to evaluate the effects of the Sichuan cuisine version of Chinese heart-healthy diet (CHH diet-SC) on blood pressure reduction among hypertensive adults. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN The Chinese heart-healthy diet (CHH) trial was a multicenter randomized controlled feeding trial among Chinese hypertensive people. We conducted a secondary analysis of the CHH trial using data from the Sichuan center in Southwest China. Fifty-three people aged 25 to 75 years with a mean systolic blood pressure (SBP) between 130 and 159 mmHg were enrolled. Eligible participants underwent a 1-week run-in period with the typical local diet and were randomized 1:1 to consume the CHH diet-SC (n=27) or typical local diet (n=26) for the next 4-week. The primary outcome was the net change in SBP, the secondary outcomes included diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and the rate of BP control. RESULTS Compared with the control group, the CHH diet-SC decreased cooking salt, oil, and red meat content and increased inclusion of whole grains, fruits, seafood, low-fat dairy, soybean, and nuts; the SBP experienced reductions of 7.54, 8.60, 9.14, and 10.1 mmHg at the end of weeks 1 through 4; the DBP was reduced 4.01 mmHg at week 4; the MAP was significantly reduced 6.02 mmHg finally; and rate of BP control significantly increased (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Adoption of the CHH diet-SC for 4 weeks can significantly reduce BP and increase the rate of BP control in hypertensive adults.

Sintilimab plus anlotinib as second or further-line therapy for extensive disease small cell lung cancer: a phase 2 investigator-initiated non-randomized controlled trial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Treatment options remain rather limited for extensive disease small cell lung cancer (ED-SCLC) patients in second or further-line setting. METHODS The phase 2 investigator-initiated non-randomized study enrolled patients who had disease progression on at least one line of platinum-based chemotherapy. Participants received intravenous sintilimab 200 mg on day one and oral daily anlotinib 12 mg on days 1-14 once every three weeks per cycle. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS). The secondary endpoints included overall survival (OS), objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR) and safety. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04055792). FINDINGS Forty-two patients were enrolled between August 29, 2019 and December 26, 2021 at Henan Cancer Hospital in China. 37 patients were evaluable for efficacy. The median follow-up was 24.8 months (IQR: 16.9-28.2). The median PFS was 6.1 months (95% CI: 5.0-7.3). The OS was 12.7 months (95% CI: 7.1-18.2). The ORR was 56.8% (21/37, 95% CI: 40.0-73.5) and the DCR was 89.2% (33/37, 95% CI: 78.7-99.7). Forty patients (40/42, 95%) had at least one treatment-related adverse event (TRAE). Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) were reported in 39 patients (39/42, 93%), while grade 3 or higher irAEs occurred in 11 patients (11/42, 26%). The most frequent irAEs were hypothyroidism (16/42, 38%), elevated gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (15/42, 36%) and elevated creatine kinase MB (15/42, 36%). The most frequent grade 3 or higher irAEs were elevated gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (5/42, 12%) and increased aspartate aminotransferase (3/42, 7%). INTERPRETATION Sintilimab plus anlotinib demonstrated promising antitumor activities as second or further-line therapy for ED-SCLC and had manageable toxicities. The findings support further randomized controlled trials of this combination regimen for ED-SCLC. Microalgae biofilm system as an efficient tool for wastewater remediation and potential bioresources for pharmaceutical product production: an overview.

Abstract
The role of microalgae in wastewater remediation and metabolite production has been well documented, but the limitations of microalgae harvesting and low biomass production call for a more sustainable method of microalgae utilization. The current review gives an insight on how microalgae biofilms can be utilized as a more efficient system for wastewater remediation and as potential source of metabolite for pharmaceutical product production. The review affirms that the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) is the vital component of the microalgae biofilm because it influences the spatial organization of the organisms forming microalgae biofilm. The EPS is also responsible for the ease interaction between organisms forming microalgae biofilm. This review restate the crucial role play by EPS in the removal of heavy metals from water to be due to the presence of binding sites on its surface. This review also attribute the ability of microalgae biofilm to bio-transform organic pollutant to be dependent on enzymatic activities and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The review assert that during the treatment of wastewater, the wastewater pollutants induce oxidative stress on microalgae biofilms. The response of the microalgae biofilm toward counteracting the stress induced by ROS leads to production of metabolites. These metabolites are important tools that can be harness for the production of pharmaceutical products.

The Effects of Parathyroidectomy vs Medical Treatments for Secondary Hyperparathyroidism in Patients Undergoing Dialysis: A Meta-Analysis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The management of secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients undergoing dialysis is debated, with uncontrolled parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels becoming more common despite the expanded use of medical treatments like cinacalcet. This study examines the clinical benefits of parathyroidectomy vs medical treatment in reducing mortality and managing key laboratory parameters in patients undergoing dialysis. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched for cohort studies or randomized controlled trials published before August 18, 2023. We included studies with comparative arms, specifically medical treatment vs surgical intervention. Patients with a history of kidney transplant were excluded. Outcomes were analyzed using hazard ratios (HRs) for mortality and weighted mean differences (WMD) for laboratory parameters. RESULTS Twenty-three studies involving 24 398 patients were analyzed. The pooled meta-analysis has shown a significant reduction in all-cause (HR, 0.47; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.35-0.61) and cardiovascular mortality (HR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.40-0.84) for parathyroidectomy vs medical treatments. Subgroup analysis showed that parathyroidectomy was associated with a greater reduction in mortality in patients with a PTH level over 585 pg/mL (HR, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.24-0.58). No mortality difference was found when all patients in the medical group received cinacalcet alongside standard medical treatment (HR, 1.02; 95% CI, 0.49-2.11). Parathyroidectomy also led to a larger decrease in PTH (WMD, 1078 pg/mL; 95% CI, 587-1569), calcium (WMD, 0.86 mg/dL; 95% CI, 0.43-1.28), and phosphate (WMD, 0.74 mg/dL; 95% CI, 0.32-1.16). CONCLUSION Parathyroidectomy may offer a survival advantage compared to medical management in patients with severe secondary hyperparathyroidism.
